Experienced DOULA or MONITRICE SUPPORT

Your birth, your way! Hospital, Birthing Center or Home, I'm here to support you.

Each woman's pregnancy and labor needs are unique, and the right place to birth is so incredibly individual.

If you are interested in Doula or Monitrice support, let's schedule a consultation! We can get to know each other, go over any thoughts or concerns you have, and I'll leave you with my contract of care to look over.

Once I receive a signed contract of care and the initial deposit, you are added to my calendar and we schedule your first appointment. I only take a few clients per quarter, so don't wait to secure your spot if you know you want support!

**If I am hired as your midwife, I cannot be both midwife and monitrice. The Monitrice Support Package is ideal for those who have hired a different midwife, have a high-risk pregnancy, or desire to have additional support in a hospital birth.**

PRENATAL SUPPORT

  • I'll meet with you for two appointments prior to 36 weeks (or as soon as possible if you sign on after 36 weeks). These appointments last about 1 hour each, and this time is used to define and understand our expectations of one another. I'll share information regarding routine procedures and anything specific to your unique situation. I'll provide you with useful tools for labor and birth, we will go over how you're feeling and I'll offer any suggestions I have to ease your body or mind during this time. We'll discuss pain management and go over the details of preparing for labor.

  • At your first appointment, I'll give you my contact information. I'm here for you, to answer any questions and guide you through what you're experiencing. We're a team, and providing this present and available care is one of my favorite aspects of this work. Don't hesitate to reach out to me! I go on call at 36 weeks, and am available 24/7 until you deliver. 3pm or 2am- it doesn't matter! I'm ready to support you and your partner when it's time to bring your baby earthside!

LABOR & POSTPARTUM

  • When I join you in active labor, I'll take a moment to observe the flow of your birth. This helps me know when to step in and support you, and when to step back and support your partner as they support you. I am here to offer a strong hip squeeze, gentle massage, or position recommendation. I'll help you stay focused and calm, cheering you on and giving you encouragement. My focus is your comfort; creating an ambient environment by dimming the lights, putting some music on, running a bath, grabbing a cold washcloth, or simply setting my hands on your shoulders and reminding you to breathe. I will help you hold and move towards the vision you created for your baby's birth.

  • After your baby is born, I will stay with you while you get settled (generally 1-2 hours). I can help with latch, initiating skin-to-skin time, or general assistance. Once you are ready for a visit postpartum, I'll come check in on you and your baby. This is an in-home visit to help you process your birth experience, as well as provide resources for you that are applicable.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A MIDWIFE, MONITRICE, & DOULA ?

Midwives, Monitrice and Doulas have different roles, but all can be a valuable asset to your pregnancy and birth experiences.

A midwife is a licensed care provider.  Midwives assess, evaluate and provide medical care for you and your baby during your pregnancy, birth and postpartum.

A monitrice provides emotional, informational, and physical support during the pregnancy, birth, and postpartum, similar to a doula. Additionally, a monitrice has training and experience to assess fetal heart tones in labor, as well as perform cervical exams to determine dilation. They often support women who plan to birth in the hospital but desire to labor at home safely, as long as possible. Once you are with your medical provider, your monitrice transitions into the role of a doula.

A doula provides emotional, informational, and physical support during the pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. They support you wherever you choose to birth! Whether you stay home, or do to a birthing center or hospital, a doula will be there to support you!

As a Certified Professional Midwife and licensed midwife in Tennessee, I provide home birth midwifery services. When my schedule allows, I'll take the occasional doula or monitrice client, but I cannot be both your monitrice/doula and midwife at the same time. While some of the roles of a monitrice, doula and midwife overlap, if you hire me to be your midwife my focus is the medical aspect of birth and the health/wellbeing of you and your baby. If you desire to have doula support as well, I am happy to refer you to some wonderful local doulas.
