Small and thorny, the Hawthorn tree has a long history of medicinal use that is backed by modern day research. It is heart medicine, both literally and figuratively, with herbal significance as well as beautiful symbolism.
The Hawthorn represents hope and courage, both of which will serve you well in pregnancy and beyond. It is a symbol of transformation. Extreme conditions are balanced by the opposite, like the thorns with flowers. Pain with Beauty. Loss. Life.

Meet your midwife!
Kate Burton, CPM, LM
I am a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) and Licensed Midwife (LM) in the state of Utah and Tennessee. I have been attending births since 2014, and in 2020 I decided to pursue a career in Midwifery. I completed my training in 2023 through the NARM PEP process, an apprenticeship model combining education with hands-on midwifery training under the guidance of dedicated preceptors. I have had the privilege of working with more than 150 families through pregnancy, loss, labor and birth, and the postpartum period.

I am a Midwife, but I was a mother first. Birth Work became my passion through my own transformational experiences of pregnancy and birth. I know that there are a lot of decisions to make. Every pregnancy is unique; maternity care cannot be treated with a “one size fits all“ approach. My goal is to involve and educate families to have a pregnancy, birth, and postpartum experience they feel empowered about.
As a midwife, I encourage preventative care through healthy eating, physical movement, and connection. I love using herbs and supplements to address different concerns. I also believe in evidence-based research and protocols to keep clients as safe as possible. I value traditional methods alongside conventional tools such as IV therapy, oxygen, and medications when needed.
I am a mom of two boys. I was born and raised in San Diego before moving to Utah, where I lived for 22 years. I acquired my Midwifery education while in Utah, and worked as a primary midwife at a birthing center there before moving to Knoxville in March of 2024. I opened my home birth practice, Hawthorn Midwifery, to serve and support families here in East Tennessee and I have absolutely fallen in love with the greenery and hospitality here!
My personal passions include learning about how trauma affects the body and ways we can work to heal it. I love helping others heal their spiritual, mental, emotional and physical body through different techniques including Foot, Face and Back Zoning.
